General Advice

We all like to take photographs of our family, friends, places we visit and the beautiful things we see on the way, to keep those special moments and pleasant events forever and to express our own artistic side.

Whether you are using a simple camera or expensive professional equipment, if you keep in mind a few simple facts you can achieve much higher quality photographs that will amplify the memories of those special moments in your life.

Three areas in which everyone can improve his or her photographic skills are: Composition, lighting and angles.

Composition

We’ve all flipped through weekend magazines and we have seen how professional photographers lay out their subjects.  Sometimes photographers group together a few people or objects in one frame, and other times they focus on one subject.  It’s important to think about who will be viewing the photo, what does he expect to see and what do you want him to see.

Whether photographing a group or people or a single person, it’s important to think of an interesting composition.  In a photograph of a group its best that the picture appear as natural as possible, as if they were “caught in the moment” and not prepared, this way the photo will be more interesting.  For example, in photographing people by a view, it’s better if they are sitting randomly on a rock rather then set up like soldiers one next to the other.

In order to emphasize the message of a single object, it’s possible to photograph it next to an object of a different size.  For example, a photograph of a man next to a huge cactus will emphasize the size of the cactus.  On the other hand, photographing a child next to a door will help to document his height at a certain age.

The biggest mistake amateur photographers make is to include too much background that does not pertain to their subject.  A close up of a solitary object separated from all the “noise” around it creates a dramatic effect.  Many excellent photographs were achieved by filling the frame with the face of the subject, thus documenting his expression for eternity.

Tips for designing a classic album:
  • Position the important photographs on the right side  - It is important to fit the positioning of the photographs to the way the album is viewed. If an album is designed in Hebrew, reading is from right to left and so in viewing the right side always receives more attention. Therefore it’s advisable to place the most important photographs on the right side in every double spread. If the album is designed in English the opposite is of course the case.
  • Create a harmonious balance between the photographs  - In order to create a harmonious and interesting design, it’s advisable to place in every double spread one very large photograph, one very small one and three (or more) medium-sized photographs.
  • Include photographs with spill-over – If one wants to create an updated, magazine-like look for an album it’s recommended to include a photograph with spill-over (a photograph without a frame, which spills over to the margins of the page).
  • Combine black & white photographs with color in order to provide visual richness to the album.
  • Do not to get carried away with backgrounds – it is recommended to select not more then three backgrounds, with an understated look, which will reappear in every album, in order to give the photographs the most emphasis.
  • Do not overdue use of effects – in order to maintain a classic, clean look.
